• Increase in the temperature results melting of polar ice caps and increase in the level of oceans and sea,which may lead to the sinking of the cities near the sea and oceans.
• Due to the rise of temperature there is increase in the vaporization due to which some part of earth becomes wetter and some suffer the serious drought.
• Increase in the temperature will throw the global ecosystem out of the balance.
• It also effects the social and economic condition of the world such as agriculture,development,transportation e.t.c.
• Increase in temperature provides favorable zone for the vectors of different diseases such as malaria,dengue e.t.c
• Global warming leads to the change in the weather cycle of the earth.

The gases which are responsible for the green house effect are the green house gases.Green house gases are the gases like carbondioxide which trap infrared radiation and produce green house effect resulting in an increase in the temperature of the environment. Besides carbondioxide,there are other gases like methane(CH4),chloroflurocarbon(CFC),nitrous oxide(N2O),water vapour and ozone(O3).These gases are not much responsible to the green house effect of the earth's atmosphere.
The amount of green house gases including carbondioxide is increasing significantaly each year. This increase in the concentration of green house gases result in the increase of temperture on the surface of the earth by trapping more and more infrared radiations.The enormous human activities including industrilization and transportation are enhancing the production rate of the green house gases.

When the solar radiations pass through the atmosphere and reach the earth surface,it is absorbed by it and re-emitted into the atmosphere.The solar radiations reach the earth in the form of shorter wave-length and is emitted back into the atmosphere in the form of longer wavelength. The longer wavelength radiations emitted by the earth back into the atmosphere is absorbed by the gases in the troposhere.The gases are called green house gases.When the green house gases in the troposphere absorb the radiations emitted by the earth,the air around the earth becomes warm.In fact this warmth of the earth's atmosphere is necessary for sustaining lives on it.If there were no green house gases,all the heat radiations emitted by the earth would escape into the space.As a result,the earth would be inhospitably cold and lives would not exist on it.It is, therefore,the green house effect is very important and is responsible for sustaining lives on the earth.However due to the over concentration of the green house in the troposphere caused by various human activities,the surface of the earth and the air close to it are overheated. The air close to it are overheated. The overheating of the air in the atmosphere is called global warming. The rise of global temperature about 0.3-0.7 was recorded in the last century. The rise in the global warming is due to increase of green house gases in the atmosphere.

The following are the major sources of the green house effect:

1. Various CO2 releasing activities: Burning of fossil fuels,industrial activities,automobiles,thermal power stations.
2. CH4 releasing activities: Domestic wastage and sewage.
3. H2O releasing acticities: Burninig of grass and natural oils,forest firing,bio-decomposition of nitrogenous fertilizers.
4. Deforestation and reducation of ground cover.
5. Chlorofluro carbon(CFC) releasing activities: Burning of foam products ,use of spray cans,use of coolant in refrigerator and air conditioners.
